Your Upper West Side Moving Company
Like many New Yorkers, OZ came from humble beginnings. Founded in 1993 by Avi Oz, we started with a handful of employees, a single hand-painted truck, and a steadfast commitment to customer satisfaction. Since then, we have grown to become one of the largest and most reputable moving and storage companies in NYC.
Our NYC Movers now perform 15,000 moves yearly. Which means we’ve seen it all. We also now have over fifty trucks (no longer hand-painted), and hundreds of employees. And we’re proud to say that 80% of our customers are repeat or referrals. But we also haven’t let success go to our heads — because, just like in the early days, we remain 120%-committed to providing each and every customer with the best possible stress-free moving experience.
And stress-free is not always easy in NYC. Moving within Manhattan specifically has its logistical challenges (traffic, parking, rush hour, building restrictions, etc.). But fear not, because our expert team — with its unparalleled dedication to excellence and decades of experience — is up to the task. Moreover, the know-how we have acquired over the years facilitating countless moves within Manhattan — big and small, day in and day out — has taught us to navigate the concrete jungle like no one else.
Moving To And From All Locations On The Upper West Side.
The Upper West Side is a rectangular area of roughly 2 square miles (or 5 sq. km) that runs up along the West side of Central Park. Bordered by the Hudson River on the west, it stretches south to north from West 59th Street all the way up to West 110th Street. It has four area codes (212, 332, 646, and 917) and four ZIP Codes (10023, 10024, 10025, and 10069).
OZ Moving covers all of the above, and then some. Maybe you’ve opted for a short-distance move within the UWS. Or maybe you’re relocating to or from — neighboring Hell’s Kitchen, way up in the Bronx, down in the Lower East Side (on the opposite end of the island), or even all the way across the river in Jersey City — our movers know the territory. We cover all 20+ neighborhoods in Manhattan, and we’ve also expanded to Westchester, New Jersey, Connecticut, and even LA in recent years. So whether you’re just moving a few blocks or crossing state lines, our movers can help you every step of the way.
And OZ can also help you with every step of the moving process itself — from providing all the necessary packing supplies to custom packing services to specialized custom services for your more delicate and/or cumbersome stuff. And we may even give you a fellow New Yorker tip as to where to get a good slice of pizza once on the UWS.
Upper West Side Moving Tips
The Upper West Side is an affluent, primarily residential neighborhood. Considered one of the city’s main cultural and intellectual hubs, it has a bit of everything — restaurants, coffee shops, bars, nightlife, playgrounds, schools, green spaces, museums, and even a few dinosaurs. Being slightly quieter and less crowded than some other parts of Manhattan, it’s also a stone’s throw away from everything else the city has to offer. In other words, it’s a great place to live. And if you plan to make the UWS your new home, we’ve got a few tips.
Neighborhood points of interest
The world-famous Central Park is literally your backyard, and it’s a great escape from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle. While there, stop by the Strawberry Fields Memorial to John Lennon (and its “Imagine” mosaic) at the W 72d Street entrance.
-For more nature, take a stroll along the beautiful tree-lined Riverside Park.
-Head up to the world-renowned Columbia University, explore its elegant grounds, and check out the surrounding area’s vibrant student nightlife too.
-For some dinosaurs, planets, and other cool stuff, head to the Museum of Natural History and the adjacent Hayden Planetarium. And grab a New York City hot dog or pretzel outside by the park while you’re at it.
-Take a breather and appreciate the simpler things in life at the American Folk Art Museum.
-Check out Lincoln Center and its numerous internationally renowned performing arts organizations. Or catch a show out at the world-famous Beacon Theater.
-See 400 years of history in NYC’s first museum and first library, aka The New York Historical Society.
-And grab some chicken and hot sour pickles at Jacob’s Pickles, some Korean-inspired comfort food at Chick Chick, and a cookie (or three) at the increasingly popular Levain Bakery.
Aside from the more famous attractions, the UWS is a unique microcosm of hidden gems and pleasant surprises of every variety. And everything is fairly walkable, so just pick a direction and explore — you won’t be disappointed.
Interesting facts about the UWS
Central Park is the most visited urban park in the U.S., welcoming over 42 million visitors annually. It’s also the most filmed location in the world, having over 500 movie credits, and counting.
The somewhat lesser-known West Side Community Garden hosts an annual tulip festival where 15,000 tulips blossom every spring.
The UWS’s New York Public Library is the second-largest library in the U.S. (after the Library of Congress), and the fourth-largest in the world. It’s home to over 50 million books.
The area that is now Columbia University was once an insane asylum.
Cost of Living on the Upper West Side
To live anywhere in Manhattan comfortably you need an annual salary of anywhere between 40K-100K (after taxes). And since the UWS is the city’s most affluent neighborhood, the cost of living is steep.
To give you an idea, a cup of coffee is about 2-4 bucks, a street hot dog (or pretzel) will cost you between $3-6 (depending on the toppings), one cookie at Levain’s is $4.50, and a meal at an ok restaurant — around $30 per person. Meanwhile, a two-bedroom apartment will be upwards of $5,500/month.
How to Find an apartment to rent
Due to the high demand, finding an apartment on the UWS can be tricky. Luckily, OZ has a comprehensive step-by-step guide to help you do just that.
